Programs

Books for Kids Africa works in four main areas in Mozambique:

Community Libraries: Lending libraries of up to 500 high quality books for both children and adults in Portuguese in local villages get books into the hands of all those interested in reading. Local facilitators provide book bags with up to ten books each to anyone interested, who in turn read books to children in their homes, schools, and communities and loan books to others.

Mobile Classroom Libraries: Mobile classroom libraries of up to 200 high-quality children’s books in Portuguese rotate among elementary classes so students can hear books read out loud, engage in discussion and activities around books, and read on their own during the school day.

Training Teachers: Students at teacher training schools are trained in a reading program emphasizing reading aloud and sustained silent reading to complement phonetic-based instruction. They learn skills and receive materials to become more effective teachers in their assigned schools.

Publishing Books: Collaborating with local and international artists and authors, Books for Kids Africa publishes culturally relevant children’s books with appropriate themes for use in the mobile classroom libraries.

The goal of Books for Kids Africa is to get children “hooked on books”. Its methodology is based on the following:

  • Access to reading materials and time to read foster good readers
  • Reading aloud motivates children to read stories
  • Providing choices in what to read fosters greater interest in reading
  • Access to books maximizes limited resources
  • Exposing student teachers to participatory methodologies and providing experience helps them establish new teaching skills
  • To get kids to want to read, adults must show they love to read
